A-W baseball gets back on track

The Akron-Westfield (A-W) baseball team got back on the winning track in a big way, with a 26-1 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (H-M-S) on June 9 in Hartley.

The Westerners were coming off a pair of losses in the MOC-Floyd Valley Tournament and turned a little frustration into a lot of runs at the expense of the Hawks.

A-W softball off to a solid start

A-W girls golf places 5th in state

The Akron-Westfield (A-W) girls golf team came into the season with lofty expectations, coming off a fifth-place finish in Class 1A in 2024. The 2025 team certainly didn’t seem to be bothered by expectations, winning the conference meet as well as finishing first in a pair of regional qualifiers to head back to the state tournament.

A-W softball opens season with two wins

The Akron-Westfield (A-W) softball team came into the season ranked 12th in the state, after a 21-7 record in 2024.

A-W baseball nearly knocks off top ranked RSM

After winning three of their first four games to start the season, the Akron-Westfield (A-W) baseball team had some confidence as they traveled to Sunrise Park in Remsen, to take on the top ranked team in Class 1A, Remsen St. Mary’s (RSM) on May 30.

A-W baseball continues to pile up runs

The Akron-Westfield baseball team is wreaking havoc on opponents at the plate. Heading into their game against Harris-Lake Park on June 16, the Westerners had scored double-digit runs in each of their last four games. Make that five in a row. A-W scored nine runs in the second inning and rolled to a 12-2 win at Sargent Field to improve to 10-5.

A-W softball continues to pile up wins

The Akron-Westfield softball team won their fourth game in a row with a 6-1 win over Harris-Lake Park on June 16 at Bob Tucker Field.

Lainey Schuknecht went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Brylie Johnson added two RBIs and Kaberlee Fairbanks had two hits to lead the Westerners offense.

Hartman having breakout season

Akron-Westfield junior Will Hartman played a key role for the Westerners baseball team as a sophomore last season. He started all 32 games, hit .337 and had 21 RBIs on a team that went 28-4 and lost in the Class 1A State Semifinals. 

A-W sends three girls to state track meet

The Akron-Westfield girls track and field had three members earn a trip to Des Moines for the IGHSAU State Meet at Drake University on May 22-24.

Kaberlee Fairbanks and Gabby Koch both qualified in the high jump and Tess Frerichs earned her trip in the 200-meter dash.

A-W baseball begins 2025 season

The Akron-Westfield baseball team opened the season with an impressive 8-2 win at Woodbury Central on May 20.

Will Hartman pitched six strong innings, striking out 10 while only allowing three hits and no earned runs.

A-W boys golf headed to state

The Akron-Westfield boys golf team earned a spot in the Class 1A State Tournament by finishing third in the district tournament at Willow Creek on May 19.

A-W girls golf team rolls to state

The Akron-Westfield girls golf team made it look easy as they earned a trip to the Class 1A State Golf Tournament by winning their regional by an impressive 14 strokes at Primghar Golf Course on May 21.
