Helping Hearts Club holds annual Christmas party

The Helping Hearts Club gathered at the home of Deb McPherson Dec. 11 for their annual Christmas party. A gift grab bag exchange containing either a Christmas ornament or Christmas decoration was held along with items donated by club members for a member who is in the nursing home. Friendship & Service distributes funds

Winners announced in Westfield Lighting Contest

The Westfield City council announced the winners of the Westfield Lighting Contest at their Dec. 18 meeting.

First place and winning $100 towards the electric bill is Jaime Adams, 134 Brule St.

​​​​​​​AOH hosts Christmas with Triumphant Sound Quartet

The Akron Opera House was the place to be Dec. 8 and 9 to hear the wonderful music of the Triumphant Sound Quartet. The event was sponsored by Akron FBC making the concert free to those attending. However, there was a freewill basket for donations which all went to the Akron Opera House restoration project.

Elementary Holiday Concert Nov. 29

The Akron-Westfield Discovergarten through fourth grade performed their Holiday Concert Nov. 29 in the elementary gym. Director was Kyle Schroeder and accompanist was Kathy Johnson.

Beth Finzen celebrates 98 years

Elizabeth (Beth) Finzen will be turning 98 years old Dec. 23. She was born on

December 23, 1925. Now, she lives at the Akron Care Center in Akron. 

Holiday Receipt Rebate winners

Congratulations to the winners of the first round of Akron Area Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday Receipt Rebate Drawing. A total of $500 Chamber Bucks were awarded. Winners were drawn Dec. 6 and could receive up to $50 in Chamber Bucks depending on the amount of their receipt. Winners can pick up winning Chamber Bucks at Security National Bank.

         The museum recently acquired a book titled History of Plymouth County with a  copyright of 1917.  One article by C.M. Hilliker of Akron tells of his arrival from Eastern Iowa in November of 1871, to wit:
