A Primary Election was held June 4 in several states including Iowa and South Dakota voting for state and county officials. Polls opened at 7 a.m. in both states with a low turn-out expected. At Alcester in Union County, SD, at 8:30 a.m. only eight had voted and in Akron, by 9 a.m. 15 had voted. Working the Akron polls, front row (l-r) Nancy Nielsen and Pam Von Hagel. Back row, Sue Gabel and Sharon Frerichs. Polls remainned open until 8 p.m. in Iowa and 7 p.m. in South Dakota.

The All-School Reunion committee met Wed., May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Security National Bank meeting room.

The Akron area was lucky May 10 to witness a colorful display of the northern lights. The lights also made an appearance the following night, but not quite as spectacular.

“Fjords, Fire, Ice!”  New Horizons United Church of Christ welcomes men and women to its annual Akron Area Program June 12, at 1:30 p.m. James and Lynette Kiger of Akron will present information on their visit to Norway and Iceland.  

Each May the Iowa Association of School Boards invites Iowans to honor and recognize school board members. This month is a designated time to show support for your local school board. The 2024 theme is “Propelling Students to New Heights.”

For the After Prom breakfast at the Akron Golf Clubhouse put on by Patti Ericson, Peoples Bank donated $300 cash and Ag Optimus donated a TV as door prizes. Winners were (l-r) Reegan McKee ($100), Arik Allard ($100), Hayden Wahlberg (TV), Bella Robinson ($100)

Ninety-eight Iowa students from 21 different schools earned top honors in the National History Day in Iowa Contest April 29 and advanced to compete in the national contest in June. Twelve of those in four projects are from Akron-Westfield. 

Members of the GFWC/IA Friendship and Service Club recently donated to several local projects. 

“Each year we raise funds through the Great Akron Scarecrow Festival and in turn put those funds to work for the community by supporting projects that need financial assistance,” stated club president Lisa Harris.
