Free summer meal program ends July 31, 2025
Akron-Westfield School District is participating in Seamless Summer Option, a nationwide program that serves free breakfast and lunch to those 0-18, Monday through Friday. These meals are available to all children, regardless of whether they attend school in the district or live in the area full-time. In 2025, the program began May 29 and ends July 31.
Lions Club member honored for ‘spark plug’ energy
As the Akron Lions’ Club Vice District Governor, Ford was honored at the MD9 State Convention in June for her work on the frontlines and behind the scenes. The Spark Plug Award is an honor bestowed upon an individual who, like a spark plug starts an engine and keeps it in motion, so do they for their organization.

Following last week’s approval of a request by Le Mars Fire-Rescue to purchase a state-of-the-art defibrillator with dollars from a national opioid settlement, the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors was met with three more requests at its Tuesday, July 8 meeting.

All Class Reunion honored Akron’s oldest graduate
Velma (Ross) Knudsen, who holds the distinction of being the oldest living graduate from Akron, Iowa, proudly served as the parade marshal for the 2025 All Class Reunion Parade. She was born in 1924 and graduated in 1943. Learn more about her life, and her memories of growing up in Akron.

Akron's Morgan Higman to perform at Fleurish Fest

Musical artist and Akron native, Morgan Higman, is set to return to the area to perform at Fleurish Fest July 19-20 in Elk Point, South Dakota.

A 2025 graduate of Akron-Westfield, Higman will be heading to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, this fall to pursue her dreams of songwriting and performing.

Six Akron candidates vie for fair queen
Six of this year’s Plymouth County Fair Queen candidates call Akron home. These young ladies will join 16 other candidates from across the county in their hopes of becoming the reigning 2025 Plymouth County Fair Queen. 
Pick Supply moves into a new storefront

Pick Supply started with a humble beginning, when Alex and Mallory Pick founded the company in their garage in August 2024. They have recently moved into 750 Industry Ave. in Akron — creating a new partnership and sharing a storefront with Wendt Repair’s auto repair shop.
