Westerners to host Wildcats for Homecoming

 

After back-to-back losses the Akron-Westfield football will have to play one of their best games of the year as they host 8th ranked Woodbury Central for Homecoming on Friday night.

A-W drops district game at IKM-Manning

 

The Akron-Westfield football team faced a pivotal road battle against IKM-Manning on September 26. The Westerners (2-0 in district), along with Woodbury Central (3-0) and St. Albert (2-0), were unbeaten in District A-8 and had a chance to put themselves in great position for a spot in the state playoffs with a win over the Wolves.

Utesch, Small lead A-W cross country

 

Archer Small and Isabella Utesch led the way for the Akron-Westfield cross country teams in the Alcester-Hudson Invitational. Small finished 27th with a time of 21:31.10 and Teygan Schram was 54th with a time of 27:05.01.

A-W volleyball battles top teams in conference 

 

It shaped up as a tough and busy week for the Akron-Westfield volleyball team (4-5, 2-2) as they had to take on the top two teams in the War Eagle conference.

First up, a home match against George-Little Rock. The Mustangs were unbeaten in the conference with a 5-0 record and were 10-4 overall.

A-W volleyball outlasts Trinity Christian

After losing a hard-fought match to conference rival South O’Brien, the Akron-Westfield volleyball team found themselves in a similar position against Trinity Christian on September 16.

A-W fights hard in loss to West Sioux

After dropping their season opener to MMCRU, the Akron-Westfield football team has found their groove. Heading into their game against unbeaten West Sioux on September 19, the Westerners (2-1) had won two straight games and outscored their opponents 55-19.

Westerners shut out West Monona

Sophomore quarterback Kaleb Johnson threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns as Akron-Westfield dominated West Monona 26-0 to pick up their second straight win of the season and spoil homecoming for the Spartans.

A-W XC shines 

It was an afternoon filled with some great performances by the Akron-Westfield cross country team as they ran in the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invite on September 9.

Westerners win big district game

 

The Akron-Westfield football team used a dominant first half as they built a 22-point lead over Westwood at home on September 6 and cruised to a 29-19 win.

The Westerners evened their record at 1-1 on the season but more importantly they won their first district game of the year in the new look Class A-8.

A-W volleyball picks up win at home

 

After opening the season 1-1, in a pair of neutral site matches, the Akron-Westfield volleyball team played their first opponent at home as they hosted MMCRU on September 2.

Utesch leads A-W girls cross country

 

Isabella Utesch finished in 12th place to lead the Akron-Westfield girls cross country team in the BHRV Nighthawk Meet on September 3 in Hull.

Westerners battle fourth ranked MMCRU

 

The Akron-Westfield football team was able to run the football with success in their season opener against fourth ranked MMCRU on August 29, but the Royals were able to make some big plays in the passing game as they beat A-W 35-7 in Marcus.

A-W alumni begin next chapter

 

Four Akron-Westfield alums who just finished playing for the Westerners are off to college to continue their academic and athletic careers.

A-W volleyball splits first two matches

 The Akron-Westfield volleyball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of matches at Hills-Beaver Creek on August 26.

“It is good to have the first two matches under our belt, so it gave us specific things to focus on in practice,” said head coach Nicolle DeRocher. “We will be more prepared for our next matches.”

A-W athletics giving players, fans the latest technology

 

 

It wasn’t that long ago that the only way to see a high school sporting event was in person. But thanks to technology and a forward-thinking group of students from the University of Nebraska, Akron-Westfield fans can watch the Westerners play live and on demand from nearly anywhere, thanks to Hudl.

A-W youth wrestlers put in the work

 

 

The Akron-Westfield (A-W) Youth Wrestling Club continues to help the current and future stars on the mat as they work to improve. The club held a free private camp at A-W School on Aug. 14 and 15, which was open to wrestlers from kindergarten through 12 grade.
