The Akron-Westfield cross country teams finished the season peaking at the right time. The boys team finished in eighth place in the state qualifying meet in Holstein on Oct. 24.

The Akron-Westfield football team may have not have started the season like they hoped, but the finish could not have been any better.

The Westerners beat Lawton-Bronson 28-21 on Oct. 25 to win their third straight game, and finish the season with a 3-6 record.

Boie, Schram lead A-W Jr. High cross country

Saelah Boie has been solid all season long for the A-W junior high cross country team and the trend continued in the War Eagle Conference meet in Marcus on Oct. 17.
Boie and Teygan Schram nearly captured a pair of top-ten finishes as Boie placed fourth with a personal best time of 14:05.23 and Schram finished 11th.

It’s been a season filled with close calls and one or two mistakes at key times costing the A-W football team wins. Against Alta-Aurelia on Oct. 11, things finally went the Westerners’ way. They put together their most complete game of the season in a 29-15 win over the Warriors.

The Akron-Westfield volleyball team certainly earned their No. 10 ranking with an 11-game winning streak, but to keep the streak alive they needed to end another streak in the process. Heading into the match on Oct. 8 against Gehlen Catholic, the Westerners had not won a match against the Jays since 2016.

The Akron-Westfield junior high cross country had a pair of runners with impressive showings on Oct. 3 at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by South O’Brien.

Saelah Boie and Teygan Schram both had personal bests in the race with Boie running an amazing race that certainly caught the attention of head coach Jerad Bruget.

It’s become a season long theme and one that the Akron-Westfield football team was hoping would change. Unfortunately, the trend continued against MMCRU on October 4 as the bounces and breaks didn’t fall the Westerners way in tough 14-7 loss.

For the second time this season, the A-W volleyball had little trouble beating West Sioux as the Westerners picked up their 11th straight win on October 1.

A-W has not allowed West Sioux to reach double-digit points in the five sets they have played in their two wins, with the last match a three-set win (25-8, 25-6, 25-8).

It’s a tried and true coaching philosophy.  Never peak too early and try to be at your best near the end of the season. The A-W cross country teams certainly seem to be doing just that after a solid race on Oct. 3 at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by South O’Brien.
