History Day students work at Pizza Ranch The 2008 Akron - Westfield National History Day team will be working at the Akron Pizza Ranch Thursday, May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. A showcase of their projects and presentations will follow in the First National Bank Community Room from 7 to 9 p.m. Donations will be accepted at either location to help defray the cost of their travels to College Park, Maryland July 15-21 where they will participate at the national level. Hope to see you there! 2003 reunion The Akron-Westfield Class of 2003 is holding a reunion May 16 At the Akron Golf Course. Cocktail hour is 7:30-8 p.m. with dinner to follow. Young student artist wins trip to Washington D.C. By Julie Ann Madden Grace “Gracie”
Martinsen likes everything but she always has a pen, crayon or pencil in
her hands, according to her mother, Dawn Martinsen of Akron. “She loves to
sing, play pretend and read books,” she added about her seven-year old
daughter who just won a trip to Washington D.C. with a painting she
created called “Reflections of Fall.” Grace completed the work of art in
art classes at Akron-
Boys have two going to state track meet by Ben Banks The
Akron-Westfield boys track team attended the Class 1A district track meet
May 10 to find out who will go to the state track meet May 15-17 in Des Kyle Groon goes flying at the district track meet. He qualified for state in the event.
Girls sending five to state track meet by Ben Banks The Akron-Westfield girls track team is sending five girls to the state track meet May 15-17 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. They qualified at the Class 1A district meet May 10 in Lawton. Karly Groon will be jumping in the high jump at the state track meet May 16 at 4:30 p.m. She jumped 5’3’’ to qualify for the state meet. Shelby Johnson qualified in the discus with a throw of 110’11”. The state discus event will be held May 16 at 2:00 p.m. Lauren Blinde will be running in the 400 meter hurdles May 16 at 3:40 p.m. She qualified with a time of 1:11.07. Jordan Harris qualified in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.33. This event will take place May 16 at 5:20 p.m. The 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay team will participate May 15 at 7:40 p.m. at the state track meet. They qualified with a time of 1:09.39. The team consists of Lauren Blinde, Kristin Martin, Karly Groon, and Jordan Harris.
Girls finish second at Heartland Relays The Akron-Westfield girls track team brought home second place at the Heartland Relays May 6 with 108 points. Hinton won the meet with 149 points. West Sioux placed third with 71 points followed by MMC with 69 points and Aurelia with 35 points. Placing first: Shelby Johnson in the discus, 114’4”; Lauren Blinde in the 400m hurdles, 73.34; shuttle hurdle relay team of Lauren Blinde, Karly Groon, Kristin Martin, Jordan Harris, 1:10.93. Finishing second: Karly Groon, high jump, 5’; Laura Willer, shot put, 30’9”; Jordan Harris, 100m hurdles, 16.58 and 400m hurdles, 74.03; Missy Dewey, 400m, 69.46. Finishing third: Lauren Blinde, 100m hurdles, 17.08 and 400m, 69.52; Karly Groon, 100m dash, 13.37; Shelby Johnson, shot put, 28’5 3/4”; 4x200m relay of Alison Kusler, Tasha Johnson, Ambra Coon, Missy Dewey, 1:58.62. Finishing fourth: Laura Willer, discus, 90’7”; Kristin Martin, high jump, 4’8”.
Girls compete in Blackhawk Relays The
Akron-Westfield girls track team traveled to Hinton to participate in the
Blackhawk Relays May 5 bringing home fourth place. Unity Christian won the
meet, Hinton was second and Sgt. Bluff-Luton third. Placing first: Shelby
Johnson in the discus, 108’1”. Placing second: Laura Willer, shot put,
34’1”; Jordan Harris, 100m hurdles, 15.93; shuttle hurdle relay team of
Karly Groon, Kristin Martin, Tasha DeRocher, Jordan Harris, 1:11.72.
Placing third: Karly Groon, high jump, 5’4”; Lauren Blinde, 100m hurdles,
17.12 and 400m hurdles, 1:11.64; Missy Dewey, 800m, 2:46.67; distance
medley relay team of Ambra Coon, Haley Banks, Alison Kusler, Missy Dewey,
4:50.85. Placing fourth: Lauren Blinde, 400m hurdles, 1:15.02; 4x100m
relay team of Alison Kusler, Tasha Johnson, Ambra Coon, Jordan Harris,
Girls golf places eighth in WEC The Akron-Westfield girls golf team placed eighth in the War Eagle Conference Tournament held in Alton May 5 with a score of 254. Hinton won the tournament with a 188 followed by South O’Brien with a 210 and West Sioux and MMC tied for third each shooting a 229. For the Westerners, Kaylee Hughes shot a 56 to lead the way. Charlene Martin shot a 62 followed by Kaitlan Klemme with a 67, Rachel Black and Krystal Toben each shot a 69, and Marissa Harvey shot a 70.
