March goes ‘out like a lion’

Old Man Winter just won’t let go. Area residents awoke Monday, March 31, to the sound of thunder and rain which soon turned to sleet and snow. Weather forecasters predicted just a couple inches but morning commuters found roads a little treacherous. Plymouth County road crews were out and about trying to maintain roadways. This snow plow operator (left) was clearing Iowa Highway 3 and County Road K-18 North. In Akron (above) before noon the weatherman said we had received three inches and the snow was still falling, making clean-up hard. In the afternoon the snow turned back to rain to add a few more inches of moisture. And, it wasn’t even April Fools Day!!

One More Time...

Three actors reprise roles in “Guys and Dolls” at ACT

The upcoming ACT production of Guys and Dolls at The Ye Olde Opera House in Akron is such a great show that three cast members were quick to jump at the opportunity to do it again! The talented cast will take to the stage April 11 and 12 with show times each evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. Then, Sunday, April 13, a matinee performance is being given starting at 2 p.m. Tim Philips (l.), Tom Schroeder (c.) and Ryan Schuknecht (r.) are the cast members repeating in the roles from previous performances. Tim and Tom were both in the 1982 production of Guys and Dolls at ACT. Ryan played the part of Sky in his senior year of high school at South O’Brien Community School. When asked why he wanted to play the role of Nathan Detroit again, Tim Philips stated, “I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could remember the lines and lyrics from the last time I played Nathan.” Tim’s wife Val is directing the show, his son, Weston, is playing in the orchestra and his daughter, Emmalee, helped with some of the choreography. It is truly a family affair for the Philips’. Tom Schroeder is playing the touch Chicago crap shooter, Big Jule. Tom said, “I must enjoy being mean, like Big Jule, since my kids tell me I am mean all the time!” Tom is enjoying the opportunity to be on stage with his wife, Jill and son, Joel, as they are also members of the 2008 Guys and Dolls cast. When asked why he wanted to portray the character, Sky Masterson again, Ryan commented, “It is one of my favorite parts in any play. Sky is cool and collected, but he is also really blindsided by love when he falls for Sarah. It’s fun to act through the process of falling in love and losing it so quickly. Plus, how could you say no to singing “Luck Be a Lady” with such a great cast of gamblers?” Reservations for your seat at the performances can be made by calling 568-3276. The production is being sponsored by First National Bank of Akron and they are hosting a dinner before the show on April 12 at Akron Jo’s, 6 p.m. Call Desirae Willms at FNB, 568-2472, by April 9 to make dinner reservations.
