Girls track off to a great start

by Ben Banks

The Lady Westerner Track team unofficially opened their season at the War-Eagle Conference Indoor Meet held at Dordt college March 17. The indoor track is two hundred meters long, making this track meet a sort of a pre season scrimmage. The Lady Westerner track team may be small in size but they compete ferociously against the competition. Shelby Johnson took first place in the shot put with a throw of 32’8’’. Laura Willier took second place in the shot put with a throw of 32’6’’. Securing both first and second in that event. In the high jump Karly Groon who qualified for state last year took second place with a jump of 5’4’’. Jordan Harris, who qualified for state track last year, took second place in the 55m hurdles at a time of 8.81 seconds, 200m hurdles at a time of 31.25, and the 55m dash at a time of 7.81 seconds. A-W had one girl take third place at the meet. Lauren Blinde took third in the 200m hurdles with a time of 32.03. Ambra Coon took fourth place in the 55m dash with a time of 8.15 seconds. Also, congratulations to Tasha Johnson, Caitlin Heyl, Haley Banks, and Alison Kusler on their relay times. As well as Missy Dewey, and Tasha DeRocher on their middle distance times.

Boys track competes in WEC

by Ben Banks

The Westerner boys track team participated in the War Eagle Conference meet at Dordt college March 17 for a pre season practice meet. Due to the size of the facility, no points were kept, and no awards were given. The boys did a very good job competing on the night. Kyle Groon, a state track qualifier in the high jump, took first place with a jump of 6’2’’. Which was the only first place finish for the boys. Joe Sievert took second place in both the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.90 seconds, and the 200m low hurdles with a time of 28.64 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Anthony Miller, Kyle Groon, Christopher Carlson, and Braxton Bursell took second place with a time of 3:52.28. Christopher Carlson took third place in the 200 low hurdles with a time of 28.79 seconds. As well as taking fifth place in the 55 high hurdles with a time of 9.47 seconds. Anthony Miller took fifth place in the high jump with a jump of 5’6’’. Overall on the night, the boys competed very well. They have made many improvements since last year. And will continue to improve over this season as well.
