Scrumptious Santas by Julie Ann Madden She’s not sure if it’s a secret ingredient such as the pure vanilla extract from Mexico or just her decorating talents that have people begging for her Christmas cookies. But for the past 16 years, LorriSchuller of Hawarden, has been making dozen after dozen that seem to disappear as fast as snowflakes. One year Schuller made over 250 dozen decorated sugar cookies: Santa faces, snowmen, stars, bells, Christmas trees and snowflakes to name a few. Her brother, Joe Hook of Akron, probably is her No. 1 customer. He’s always requesting some and is very willing to eat the “broken ones.” Schuller isn’t sure but she suspects boxes of the broken ones may have helped sweeten the deal when Joe was courting Akron Hometowner Publisher Dodie! She’s perfected the art so that there are not many broken ones now. A few years ago, she made a special batch for Joe and one of her other brothers, Terry Hook of Colorado. They were snowflakes frosted with yellow sugar “snow.” Her note said, “Don’t eat any yellow snow.” Schuller, who first made a few batches to sell at a craft fair 16 years ago, doesn’t remember where she obtained her special recipe. “You know how you try different ones -- I think I got it from a cookbook,” said Schuller, explaining this recipe calls for mixing the ingredients similar to recipes for making pie crusts. “You don’t use an electric mixer.” Usually she begins baking the cookies right after Halloween when people start ordering them by the dozens. Schuller has between 300 - 400 cookie cutters -- some for every occasion or holiday. This year she only used one - Santa. “It’s hard trying to make enough to satisfy everybody,” said Schuller, who claims this is the last year she’s taking orders. She plans to spend more time on family Christmas projects next year. “I need time to do my own Christmas shopping. Presents have been really lean because I have no time (except to bake Christmas cookies).” Schuller, and her husband Frank, have three children who live in the area and seven grandchildren with another on the way. “If people want the recipe, I will share it,” said Schuller. See the recipe below. If it just doesn’t taste like hers, she can’t help it. “People can tell the difference between the ones I make and Missy (my daughter) makes,” said Schuller. “I think my favorite part is when I can give them to people to brighten their lives,” said Schuller. “I’ve given quite a few away to friends and people who have cancer or are sick.”

Coach Zach Pfantz resigns At the Dec. 10 Akron-Westfield School Board meeting, the board members unanimously accepted the resignation of Akron-Westfield Head Football Coach and physical education teacher Zach Pfantz. Pfantz has been hired as Central College’s football recruiting coordinator and defensive position coach. Central College is located in Pella. Pfantz, who joined the A-W faculty this fall, coached the Westerners to a 5-4 record this season ending the team’s 21-game losing streak. He also taught high school physical education. The board required Pfantz to pay up to $500 of the advertising costs the district spends to find his replacement. His resignation is effective Dec. 21. His wife, Stacy, is also an A-W employee; she is a teacher’s aide. Her resignation, which is effective the same date, is on the board’s January meeting agenda.
A-W wrestlers crowned Conference Champions
By Hank Krause & Chad Ericson The Akron-Westfield wrestlers traveled to Hinton on Tuesday, Dec. 11 to grapple in the War Eagle Conference meet. A-W had five wrestlers become champions. Tyler Schneider 130, Brody Verschoor 152, Chad Morehead 171, John Sievert 189, and David Hecht at 215. Runner-up wrestlers were Joe Sievert and Alex Waterbury. A-W led the tourney with a 4-0 record as they competed in a dual competition. A-W was 4-0, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 3-1, Sgt. Bluff- Luton 2-2, and West Sioux and Hinton trailed. Marcus Edgington of Hinton, slipped by Joe Sievert 7-5. Sievert came close to an upset as time ran out. John Sievert’s decision with Christ Porter of West Sioux was 9-5. Both wrestlers were ranked at tourney time.
Boys defeat Dakota Valley by Hank Krause The Dakota Valley Panthers visited the Akron-Westfield Westerners on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and ended up trapped. A-W defeated DV 75-58. The A-W boys were led by three players in double figures. Mike Oetken scored 24, while Justin Koch had 18 and Ben Wolthuizen added 14. Both teams started out well matched and both teams really hustled and worked hard. A-W opened up a 10 point lead, 24-14 in the second quarter but DV cut it to 25-21 with 2:30 left in the half. A-W rallied to lead at half 32-23. A-W played well in the second half as they maintained their lead. In the fourth quarter everything seemed to go A-W’s way. They rebounded well, played good defense and on offense found the open man underneath to score. A-W also really worked hard on the offensive boards to keep the ball in play after a missed shot. A-W finished strong to make the final score 75-58. Kyle Hooks led DV scoring with 16 points. Scoring A-W: Oetken, 24; Koch, 18; Wolthuizen, 14 DV: Hooks, 16
A-W girls outrun Dakota Valley by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield girls were host to the Dakota Valley Panthers on Tuesday, Dec. 10. A-W, led by Karly Groon who scored 18 points plus pulling down eight rebounds and blocking two Panther shots. Mackenzie Heyl added 11 points and Shelby Johnson 10. The Westerner defense also forced 34 Panther turnovers while shooting 48 percent from the floor to defeat DV 61-42. A-W had trouble going inside in the first quarter but still raced to a 14-4 lead. The second quarter proved to be great as A-W ran off 25 points. They had better movement and got better shots. Groon got open underneath and A-W ran to a 39-18 halftime lead. A-W played their game in the second half as they forced many traveling calls and bad passes. The girls are playing better each game, both individually and team wise. A-W: 14- 9-53-61 DV: 8-18-31-42 Scoring A-W: Groon, 18; Heyl, 11; Johnson, 10 DV: Wall, 9; Dunn, 8
A-W loses heartbreaker by Hank Krause The arch-rival West Sioux Falcons came to visit and stole one from the Akron-Westfield Westerner boys on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Despite Mike Oetken’s 30 point scoring, A-W lost it in overtime, 55-54. The two lovable foes met and really battled to the bitter end. A-W’s offense really worked well in the first half as time and again Oetken was open under the bucket and A-W really capitalized on the situation. A-W jumped to a 12 point 27-15 lead at halftime. A-W played really excellent defense and took WS out of their game plan. In the third quarter A-W had a 14 point lead 39-25 as they continued to play good defense and rebounded well. The fourth quarter was a good quarter of ball but the Falcons came out on top. With seven minutes to play A-W still led 39-29. Mitch Jasper started the three point onslaught as he drilled one from the right side. WS’s main man, Jerod Reinking, hit one from NBA length to make it 46-44. WS scored just before the buzzer to knot it at 46. The most glaring fact was that A-W did not score a point in the last four plus minutes in regulation. In overtime things started out well as Derek Appley scored twice from underneath to make it 50-46. A-W later had the ball but a bad pass into the middle really hurt. Grant Degen stole the ball and went in for a lay up. A-W still led 52-49. Reinking drained another long three to tie it at 52. A-W came back as Justin Koch scored to give A-W the advantage 54-52. Reinking again hit another tremendous three to give WS the lead 55-54. A-W had one last gasp with two seconds to play. A-W got the ball to Oetken but his shot fell short. A-W: 11-27-39-46-54 WS: 7-15-27-46-55 Scoring A-W: Oetken, 30; Appley, 9 WS: Reinking, 17; Ratzsch, 11
West Sioux girls outrun A-W
by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield Westerners were host to the West Sioux Falcons on Tuesday, Dec. 11. It seemed as though A-W was somewhat intimidated by the Falcons, especially the first half. WS ended up defeating A-W 41-33. A-W still stayed close by trailing 19-16 at the break. A-W hampered by bad passes finally settled down WS who are not really big but are athletic and very quick. A-W had some decent shots at the basket but seemed to hurry them so a very few fell. In the second and third quarter A-W scored 12 points. Six in each quarter. WS in turn built a 10 point lead 30-20. A-W put on a short rally to get within six, 32-26. McManaman hit a three to push the lead for WS back to nine. A-W came back to cut it down 35-30 but could get no closer. A-W had the shots but a couple of missed lay ins and free throws led to A-W’s demise. A-W: 10-16-22-33 WS: 14-19-32-41 Scoring A-W: Groon, 10; Heyl, 10 WS: McManaman, 18
A-W girls hammer Eagles
by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield girls traveled to Marcus to take on the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles on Friday, Dec. 14. A-W came out on top, 62-36. MMC started by shooting well from the outside and at one time had a 12-7 lead. A-W ran off 13 straight to lead after one, 20-12. A-W used good ball movement and excellent defense to halt the Eagles. A-W controlled the boards plus forced a number of turnovers which resulted in easy lay-ups. A-W stretched the lead to 48-27 as the two teams really played an even tempo in the third quarter. Coach Kent Johnson had the luxury of using a lot of underclassmen in the fourth quarter. Things got a little out of control but A-W still controlled the game. A-W’s leading scorers were Jordan Harris with 17, Shelby Johnson 16 with Mackenzie Heyl, Karly Groon and Laura Kleihauer all had nine each. A-W: 20-38-51-62 MMC: 12-20-29-36 Scoring A-W: Harris, 17; Johnson, 16; Heyl, Groon, & Kleihauer, 9 MMC: Taylor, 10
A-W boys destroy MMC Eagles
by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield boys on the road to Marcus went into the Eagles nest and raised complete havoc on Friday, Dec. 14. The Westerners defeated the Eagles, 81-36. The Eagles led 2-0 before the Westerners ran off 25 straight points to lead at the quarter break, 25-2. Justin Koch scored 14 points and Mike Oetken 12 in the half as A-W’s lead mounted to 45-18 at halftime. Coach Todd Colt set the starters down and used his bench fully. A lot of young players got some varsity playing time and they performed quite well. A-W led by 40 at the end of three 63-23 as the young kids kept up the early pace. Ben Wolthuizen, Alex Frankl, Anthony Miller, Grant DeRocher, Mike Harris, and Fernando Beeck all off the bench did an admirable job. Koch had 14, Oetken 12, Wolthuizen, 10 and Miller 10 to lead the A-W team. Of all the A-W players only one failed to register in the score book. Jordan Boekhout led MMC with 22. His highlight for the MMC fans was when he dunked the ball on a drive-in. A-W controlled the game from start to finish and improved its record to 6-1. A-W: 25-45-63-81 MMC: 2-18-25- 6 Scoring A-W: Koch, 14; Oetken, 12; Miller, 10; Wolthuizen, 10 MMC: Boekhout, 22
A-W finished fifth in Spencer meet
by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield wrestlers traveled to Spencer on Saturday, Dec. 15 to wrestle in the tough Spencer Invite. A-W finished fifth out of ten in the meet as they trailed winners Clear Lake, Mason City, Spencer, and Twin River Valley of Bode. A-W had three champions. Braxton Bursell at 145, Joe Sievert at 160 and John Sievert at 189. Bursell was unseeded in the meet but came through with three pins. Not bad for a kid who was drawn into the meet via a pig-tail match. Pig-tail means you have to wrestle someone else to even get to the main event. Joe Sievert pinned his way through the entire tourney including the number two ranked wrestler in the state in 34 seconds. John Sievert won as he also pinned his way through the contest. A-W had two runners-up. Brody Verschoor 152, and Chad Morehead 171, both lost to ranked wrestlers in the finals. Both were very close matches. David Hecht placed third at 215; and Josh Taylor fourth at 119. A-W was very close to finishing third behind some very strong teams. Kids are working hard and will work harder after Christmas break to get ready for sectionals. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our readers!! Bah-humbug to my two know it all writers and wanna-be coaches. |
