All invited to remembrance concert

By Julie Ann Madden

He loved animals – he had a pet snake, a half corn and half rat snake. He loved anything athletic – from dodge ball tournaments and hacky-sack to basketball, boxing, fishing and bowling. “Bowling meets were never dull,” said Myra Clarey, an Akron-Westfield junior about her friend, Tyler Dawdy. “He was always talking.” “The way he bowled – he used to bowl funny,” said Myra, who was on the high school bowling team with Tyler. She admits she was mad when Tyler scored a “200” before she did. “I had been bowling since I was seven, and he started when he was a sophomore and got a ‘200’ before I did.” Tyler would release the bowling ball onto the bowling lane, then try to direct the ball where to go – hoping it would stay out of the gutters or not curve the wrong way – with hand motions. “Sometimes it worked,” said Angela Horn, an Akron-Westfield senior, a classmate of Tyler’s and also a member of the bowling team. Tyler loved music and to dance. “He wasn’t shy,” said his mother. “He didn’t care what he looked like out on the dance floor.” “Prom night was so fun,” said Angela. “He was dancing the whole time.” Often, he’d join friends to do the dance, “The Worm” or he’d be break- dancing. “He was always happy,” she added. “Always had a smile on his face.” “Tyler loved everybody,” said his mother Jodi Banks of rural Akron. “He always had a very positive attitude. He never wanted anybody to be left out.” They miss him terribly. Tyler was killed in a car accident on May 19 of this year. He would have been a senior at Akron-Westfield High School this fall. “He was an ‘everybody’ type of person,” said Myra. “He would talk to everybody, no matter who you were.” “In a way I wanted ‘everybody’ to remember him,” she said. His friends, including Class of 2008 classmates, have planned a concert, the Tyler Dawdy Remembrance Concert, which will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Akron-Westfield High School new gymnasium. Dawson Carter, an Akron-Westfield sophomore, explained that they’d heard the Christian band, Willet, perform last November in Akron. Willet band members agreed to come perform for the Tyler Dawdy Remembrance Concert. All are welcome, said Dawson, explaining that admission is a free-will donation. The Akron-Westfield Class of 2008 will decide how the proceeds will be used. They are considering a Tyler Dawdy Memorial Scholarship or a memorial at graduation.

Fund-raiser is Friday

for 2007 A-W graduate

By Julie Ann Madden

Fellow Akron Pizza Ranch coworkers and friends are hosting a fund-raiser to help 2007 Akron-Westfield graduate Jason Bumsted with ongoing medical expenses. From 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. this Friday, the Akron Pizza Ranch will be serving their buffet. The fund-raiser also includes Akron-Westfield FFA selling ice cream in front of the Akron Pizza Ranch. All tips and donations made at this time will go to Jason, who was injured in a car accident on July 20. In addition, Manager Tami Small will also donate a percentage of the day’s sales. Jason, the son of Dave and Karen Bumsted of Westfield and twin brother of Jarrod, has worked at the Pizza Ranch for about two years. In school, he was active in FFA at local, state and national levels. He was the chapter’s parliamentarian, competed in livestock judging and had three Supervised Agricultural Experience projects: pigeons, horses and a cow-calf herd. In 2006, he received the Iowa FFA Degree, the highest state FFA award. In addition to FFA, Jason was on the A-W Honor Roll, played football, baseball and golf for the Westerners and the French horn in band. He was his church’s Lutheran Youth Organization president. Due to the severity of his injuries, Jason will miss the first semester of college this fall. Friday evening he will be at the Pizza Ranch and at the A-W Sports Drink Scrimmages.
