Westerner girls: state runner up!!

A-W falls to Solon in championship game

Akron-Westfield met the two time 2A state runner-up Solon Spartans. The Solon bunch defeated A-W 6-0 in the match up to become state champions in Class 2A. The A-W girls have nothing to hang their heads about. Being nearly the smallest school in class 2A and facing one of the largest schools in the class, and coming in second in the state is nothing to sneeze at. The Spartans ranked No. 1 all year lived up to their reputation as a fine team who are excellent players. Solon scored three in the first as they sent nine players to the plate. Solon scored three runs on three hits and two A-W errors. For all practical purposes it was over at that point but our kids kept at it. A-W had only one runner reach second base the entire game. In the first Tana Colt singled and stole second but could go no further. In the second Jessica Horton led off with a single but got put out at second on Holly Borchers fielders choice. A-W, not having a runner get past second, three times had base hits but always after two were already out. Kayla Smith and Becca Smith, Solon’s pitcher, each gave up six hits. Kayla Smith surrendered three free passes but struck out five. Solon was a fantastic group of girls. They are big, very athletic plus they can really throw the ball. A-W is very well schooled on the game but so was Solon. I was really impressed with their arm strength. I would love to see Solon and Valley West Des Moines have a go at it. A-W finished the year with a fine 37-  record. For the three seniors Holly Borchers, Tana Colt, and Rachel Harris, they combined a five year record of 180-15. Congratulations to Rachel Harris, Tana Colt, and Kayla Smith for being named all-tournament.
