Fiery crash leaves one dead, one hospitalized
Iowa State Patrol, Plymouth County and Akron authorities work together at Akron’s second fatality accident in just two months.
One person was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident on Friday afternoon, just south of 190th Street on County Road K-13. According to Plymouth County sheriff’s reports, on July 20, a motorist driving northbound on County Road K-13 allegedly crossed the center line into the path of a southbound 1999 Mercury Cougar driven by Jason W. Bumsted, 19, of Westfield. Bumsted was life-flighted to Mercy Medical Center by Mercy Air Care. He remains hospitalized as of press time. The driver of the 2001 Chevrolet Blazer was pronounced dead at the scene, and the body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny, said Plymouth County Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo. An autopsy was conducted but a positive identification of the body has not been made. Additional DNA testing is being conducted in order to make a positive identification. The medical examiner’s office anticipates two to three weeks before results are available. The deceased is believed to be Amy Solomon, 47, of Westfield. Carlsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and services are pending at this time.
Two men considered ‘heroes’
By Julie Ann Madden Maybe it was just being in the right place at the right time but a Westfield family is grateful for two former Akron students’ quick thinking and actions. At 3:32 p.m. July 20, when Grant Krentz, 21, and Shawn Milbrodt, 18, came upon the scene of a fiery two-vehicle accident on County Road K-13, they took actions which resulted in saving one of the two victims involved in the accident. According to Grant’s mother, the Chevrolet Blazer in the ditch was already on fire when they arrived at the scene. They couldn’t see anyone in that vehicle and assumed the driver had been thrown out or had gotten out. So, Shawn ran to the 1999 Mercury Cougar while Grant tried calling 9-1-1 but was unsuccessful. Grant then ran to help Shawn pull Jason W. Bumsted, 19, Westfield, from his vehicle, which was where the fire was heading. Once they had him out of the car, then Grant drove to nearby farm houses to call 9-1-1. “If it wasn’t for those two, (our son) wouldn’t be alive because both vehicles burned,” said Dave Bumsted, father of Jason. “We owe those men his life because if it hadn’t been for them, he wouldn’t be here.” “That’s what I’ll tell them when I see them,” said Bumsted, who remains at his son’s side at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. “We’re glad they were there, and it took a lot of courage to do what they did.” “County Road K-13 isn’t a road that our family usually takes,” said Gaylene Krentz, mother of Grant. Grant lives in Sioux City and Shawn lives in Akron, said Krentz, explaining they hadn’t planned on going to Akron, but when they did, they ended up on County Road K-13. “It was God’s plan that put them there,” she said. “It’s a miracle.” “All the calls, offers of help, I’m glad we live where we do,” said Bumsted. “The community has been so supportive, and I’d like to thank everybody for everything they’ve done.” “It makes me feel good that we’re in a place where people care about each other,” said Bumsted. “It’s just unbelievable the people who have called.” “We thank them for all their prayers, all their thoughts and everything,” said Dave. “We’re going to get through this the best way we can.” “Those two boys may not think they are heroes, but in my eyes they are,” said Dave. “I’m just glad they were there. That’s all I can say.”

by Hank Krause Kayla Smith threw a complete game no hitter and struck out 14 as Akron-Westfield shut out West Sioux, 6-0, July 16 in the first round of district action in Akron. West Sioux was the visiting team but the home team on the scoreboard. A-W had their troubles in the first four innings as they really couldn’t get anything started. A-W did get some base runners on, but were stymied by pop flies. A-W popped up nine times in the game. In the fifth the tide turned as Ambra Coon singled for the Westerners. Rachel Harris reached on a three base error, Shelby Johnson was hit by a pitch, and Kayla Smith walked to set things up. Jessica Horton and Holly Borchers both had run scoring hits and A-W led 4-0. In the sixth, Harris doubled and Tana Colt singled up the middle to give A-W one more run. was started by a Horton hit. Karly Groon, pinch hitting, singled to left, Coon singled, and Harris singled to score one. Smith, who recorded 14 strikeouts, at one time struck out eight batters in a row. Harris and Coon both had three hits for A-W while Horton had two. A-W had 11 hits for the game for a good night. Overall this was a good tough game, considering all the upsets around the area. But it’s tournament time!
