Gorilla Project announced

Hyperion Resources, Inc., a privately held, international energy company based in Dallas, announced June 13 it plans to build the most environmentally sound energy center in the United States, including the first oil refinery built in this country since 1976. A Hyperion Project Executive  confirmed that a tract of land in Union County is one of the sites in the Midwest being considered for the green energy center. Other potential locations have not been disclosed.

The refinery will refine approximately 400,000 barrels of oil per day into clean, green transportation fuels. It will process heavy crude oil from Canada and ship it to markets in the U.S. See the June 20 issue of The Hometowner for the full story and hear remarks by those at the press conference

Westerner boys stomp Lawton-Bronson

by Hank Krause

The Akron-Westfield boys gave Josh Mahaney a six run lead

to work with and made it look very easy. A-W defeated the Lawton-Bronson Eagles 11-2 on Thursday, June 7 at Lawton.

Things got started in the first as Brody Verschoor singled, Chad Morehead walked, and Isaac Beeck homered to put A-W up 3-0. The Eagle pitcher issued three straight walks before Mike Oetken singled to score two more. Jason Bumsted singled to score one more to give A-W a 6-0 lead. A-W then scored single runs in the second and third innings

and two more in the fifth. Mahaney, who pitched a complete

game, was never really in trouble. AW now has evened their

record at 4-4.

A-W boys drop nail-biter

by Hank Krause

The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys played at Akron-Westfield Monday, June 4. It proved to be a wild game and A-W fell short in an extra inning affair. MMC led, A-W tied it up and the two teams battled for 11 innings before A-W lost, 8-7.

MMC jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning as the Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate. MMC used four hits, three walks, and an error to give the Eagles the lead. MMC scored one run in the sixth to have a 6-0 lead. A-W exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth as they sent 13 hitters to the plate for six runs. The highlight was Isaac Beeck's

home run to score three. AW scored three more to tie the

game at 6. MMC scored one in the seventh and A-W came back to score one as Justin Koch singled, followed by Bumsted's hit to tie it at 7. In the eighth MMC scored one more to take the lead once again Doug Loutsch got on by

an error, Koch singled, Bumsted singled, and Tyler Johnson singled to tie it again. In the eleventh an error put on an Eagle who was later sent home on a hit to give MMC the lead once more. A-W went quietly and it was all over. A-W out hit the Eagles 15 to 7 but the six errors really hurt.

A-W shuts-out Hinton

by Hank Krause

The Akron-Westfield Westerner girls kept their scoreless

innings alive as they shut-out the Hinton Blackhawks. A-W traveled to Hinton Wednesday, June 6 and trimmed the Blackhawks, 11-0. A-W again started a little slow as they scored one run in the first inning but left the bases loaded. A-W scored one more in the third to lead, 2-0. A-W then decided enough was enough and scored five times in the fourth. Using three hits and three walks plus an error, the Westerners broke it open. A-W went quietly in the fifth but again erupted for four runs in the sixth to make the score 11-0. A-W pounded out 13 hits in the contest. Kayla Smith led the way with three while Rachel Harris, Shelby Johnson and Jessica Horton each had two. Smith pitched for A-W and allowed four hits while striking out seven. A-W again left runners in the first two innings but came through when they needed it.

A-W handles West Wolverines

by Hank Krause

The Akron-Westfield Westerner girls went to work on the Sioux City Wolverines in the second game of the West

Tourney, June 1-2 defeating the Wolverines 9-3. A-W got an early 1-0 lead as Rachel Harris singled, stole second, then a wild pitch moved her to third. Kayla Smith drove her home. West tied it up at one then took the lead 3-1 in the second.

Caitlin Heyl pitched for A-W and she really settled down after the second inning. Heyl gave up four hits for the game. Heyl struck out three and walked four. A-W had six hits for the game but also used eight West walks. Harris and Haley Banks had two hits each but a big hit to really put things away was by Alison Kusler. Kusler hit a shot down the line to score a couple of runners to really put A-W in command. A-W scored four times in the third and again in the fifth. A-W used four base-on-balls in the third and all four scored. In the fifth two walks and three hits plated four more. For an eight grader, Heyl pitched very well retiring ten of the last 13 batters she faced.
