A-W History Day students begin road to nationals By Julie Ann Madden On Feb. 19, the
Akron-Westfield's local History Day competition was held. Students have
created seven exhibits, five documentaries, six performances and one term
paper hoping to continue the A-W tradition of competing in the National
History Day competitions this summer. This year's theme is Triumph and
Tragedy in History.
Exhibits Exhibits are a board display about a topic the students have researched and presented using the theme. This year's topics include: Lane Frost by Ethan Hecht; Colorado River Compact by Carla Robinson; The Discovery of King Tut by Garrett Beeck; Titanic by Chet Willer and Spencer Frankl; Dust Bowl by Katie Coyle, Kylee Reed and Jessica Webster; Titanic by Christina Clarey and Casey Armstrong; and Rape of Nan King by Samantha Burdick and Ruth Kroll. Fourth and fifth grade Talented And Gifted students also created exhibits; however, they are not eligible for competition. They were: Ellis Island by Des Oltmanns and Mikayla Morey; The Wright Brothers by Corbin Bundy and Trevor Hansen; and Ruby Bridges by Dana Hedlund and Mariah Grimm. Documentaries Students created video documentaries about a topic: Sioux City Stockyards by Zach Tindall and Mitch Hedlund; D Day by Brice Hoffman and Brady Rust; Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire by Sarah Parkinson and Alison Kjar; The Doolittle Raid by Ashley Johnson and Lauren Heeren; and Howard Hughes by Erica Kjar. Performances Students perform live, acting out various characters through the use of props on a topic: The U.S.S. Indianapolis by Coreen Robinson; The Duluth Lynching by Katherine Tindall; Carrie Chapman Catt by Courtney Berntsen, Monica Harvey & Laura Tentinger; The Newsboys Strike of 1899 by Caitlin Heyl, Tasha Johnson, Ben Brown & Joel Schroeder; Polio by Jaclyn Smith, Emily Miller, Katlyn Mace, Jayde Ostermeyer and Haley Coyle; and Community of Peace cofounders: Betty Williams, Mairead Corrigan by Annie Kjar & Jesa Wolthuizen. Paper Bubonic Plague by Marissa Snedeker. The students eligible will compete in the District History Day beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, March 9 at the AEA Building in Sioux City. The Junior Division State History Day competition is April 30 and the Senior Division is May 7, both at the History Museum in Des Moines. The public is invited to attend the all-day district competition.
by Hank Krause The State Wrestling Tournament held in Des Moines last week proved to be an exciting and pleasing event as A-W sent five of seven wrestlers to the podium. Not only did A-W have five medal winners they also tied for third with Central Lyon in the overall team standings behind Twin River Valley Bode and Don Bosco Gilbertville. Marshall Koethe was champion at 130 lbs. and led the way for the Westerners, but he had help in the team category. Koethe won by a pin with two seconds left in the first period of the championship match to take first place. Chad Morehead took third at 160 lbs. while Brody Verschoor was the fourth place winner at 140 lbs. David Ericson won seventh place at heavyweight while John Sievert was the eighth place finisher at 145 lbs. A-W also had two other wrestlers in competition who did not place: Joe Sievert and David Hecht. Both wrestlers lost in the first round, came back to win the next match and then met tough opponents in the third round and lost. It was said that Hecht was in a brutal 152 lb. weight class for 1A. There are 16 wrestlers all over the state in each weight class. Therefore, things get very competitive. It was nice to see A-W get the third place team trophy. Coach Van Oort and the guys accepted the award following completion of the finals round Saturday evening. At the state meet you have eight mats going at one time and at one time three of the mats were covered by officials Doug Manley, Tom Huls, and Brad Harvey. This is a feat in itself - having three guys from a town this small at the state tournament. The incredible thing is that A-W isn't done yet. This Saturday they travel to Cedar Rapids for the team duals. AW will tangle with Interstate 35 Truro in the first round.
