School Board gives Parkinson early retirement benefits

By Julie Ann Madden

There will be no private hearing on Feb. 15 regarding Akron-Westfield Head Football Coach Craig Parkinson’s coaching contract. At 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, the Akron-Westfield School Board

held a special school board meeting. After going into closed session and discussing the matter with the school board’s attorney, Drew Bracken of Des Moines for 30 minutes via speaker phone, the board took action in open session. Board Member Kirk Banks made a motion, stating: “I move

we accept Craig Parkinson’s resignation from his teaching and coaching duties, effective at the

end of the 2006-2007 school year and that we approve an offer of early retirement benefits for Craig

Parkinson due to unique circumstances justifying a one-time grant of such benefits.” Board Member Janet Willer seconded the motion. The vote was five affirmative, one abstaining with Board Member Phil Parks being absent from this meeting. The affirmative votes were cast by Board President Jim Black and Board Members Kevin DeRocher, Roger Oetken, Kirk Banks and Janet Willer. Board Member Gordy Johnson abstained from casting a vote. In addition to the A-W School

Board, Board Secretary Jodi Thompson, Superintendent Ron Flynn, Principals Cathy Bobier and Derek Briggs and Greater Hoyt School Board Members Greg Heeren, Lynn Johnson and Lance

by Hank Krause

Akron-Westfield traveled to Rock Valley Tuesday, Jan. 30 for a double dual with Rock Valley and Woodbury Central. A-W beat Rock Valley 47-22. Winners for A-W were Tyler Schneider by a technical fall. Brody Verschoor won by a pin and Joe Sievert also had a technical fall. Other pin winners were John Sievert, Doug Loutsch, David Hecht and despite his injury Dave Ericson finished his match to win by a pin. The A-W wrestlers got stuck by Woodbury Central 50-21. The Wildcats came ready to roll and roll they did. Tyler Schneider, Joe Sievert and David Hecht all won by falls. David Ericson got hurt in a Rock Valley match. Ericson got hit under the eye to open up a cut. Ericson had to have four stitches to close the cut but has been cleared to start practice again on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Sectionals are Saturday, Feb. 10 at Rock Rapids Central Lyon High School starting at “High Noon!”

St. Mary’s boys get by A-W

by Hank Krause

The St. Mary’s boys came to visit Tuesday, Jan. 30. St. Mary’s came from behind to sneak by the Akron-Westfield boys, 60-55. A-W only held a narrow 21-20 lead in the second quarter, but still it was a lead. The two teams were well matched and it proved to be a very good game. A-W led at the end of one 16-15 until Mike Ruba scored to put the Hawks up 24-21. Just before halftime Andy Steichen gave the Hawks at six point lead, 33-27. Derek Appley hit a three at the buzzer to narrow it to 33-30. St. Mary’s spread it out to an eight point advantage midway through the third but Appley hit a three and Roman Eastman scored a bucket to narrow it to 48-45 St. Mary’s. The fourth quarter was real interesting as A-W put on a real effort but just couldn’t quite get over the edge. Mike Oetken, who led A-W with 17, pulled A-W within one, 52-51. Ruba scored but A-W was called for an intentional foul. Eric Eskra hit a short jumper to put A-W back into contention, 57-55. Ruba then hit a bucket to end it at 60-55. Good game!

A-W: 16-30-45-55 SM: 15-33-48-60 Scoring A-W: Oetken, 17; Appley, 12 SM: Ruba, 19; Klein, 15; Ruden, 12

A-W Westerners beat A-H boys

by Hank Krause

The Akron-Westfield Westerner boys were the hosts Saturday evening Feb. 3 and hosted it well. A-W came out on top 52- 30. A-W broke out to a 17-13

first quarter lead and never trailed throughout the entire affair. It would have been wider but my wife’s nephew blew another layup. A-W played good defense and rebounded very well. They really worked hard under the boards. A-W was led by three players in double figures and they were evenly balanced. Mike Oetken had 14; Justin Koch 11;

Eric Eskra, 12 and Derek Appley

had nine. Chris Day led A-H with eight.

A-W’s defense really stymied A-H as the Cubs scored one point during the final 11 minutes. Coach Colt, still trying to find a solid combination, plays a lot of different kids. Being as young as they are they’re getting a lot of valuable experience which will be to their advantage in the next few years.

A-W: 17-29-42-52 A-H: 13-21-29-30 Scoring A-W: Oetken, 14; Eskra, 12; Koch, 11; Appley, 9 A-H: Day, 8

A-W routs St. Mary’s girls

by Hank Krause

The Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks were the visiting team Tuesday, Jan. 30. Akron-Westfield opened up a 20-0 lead before St. Mary’s hit a free throw to remove the big “O”. The Westerners defeated the Hawks 79-38. Led by Tana Colt, who scored 30 points for the night, A-W completely dominated the game from beginning to end. A-W rebounded well and blocked out under the boards. A-W also used their quick hands to harass the Hawks. A number of times St. Mary’s never got a shot at the bucket because one of the A-W girls swiped the ball and away they went. A-W again used a lot of girls as the underclassmen got a chance to play. Off of the bench was Laura Kleihauer, Jordan Harris, Karly Groon and Alison Kusler to name a few, are starting to show their abilities.

A-W: 22-36-61-79 SM: 6-17-30-38 Scoring A-W: Colt, 30; Harris, 12; Miller, 11 St. Mary’s: Krier, 14

Alcester-Hudson pays a visit

by Hank Krause

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs came to visit Akron-Westfield girls Saturday afternoon Feb. 3. A-W came away a winner at 63-35. The A-W girls raced out to a 12-0 lead and had things well in control as they had a 21-7 first quarter lead. Led by Tana Colt and Brittney Miller A-W shot 53 percent

from the floor. Colt scored 25 and Miller 16 to lead all scorers. A-W now has a record of 18-1 overall and 8-0 in conference play. They have two very tough games yet to play. A-W used quick hands and feet to pass the ball and run the floor very well. Plus they did a good job of rebounding and blocking out under the boards. A-W got it going early and just played pretty good basketball.

A-W: 21-42-56-63 AH: 7-21-25-35 Scoring A-W: Colt, 25; Miller, 16 AH: Hongslo, 8; Brown, 7; Heeren, 7
