A few flurries or so they said By Julie Ann Madden Thursday morning started out as a bright, clear morning but by 10 a.m. visibility had dropped to less than a quarter-mile and large beautiful snowflakes had begun falling. Above, wind gusts create a pretty sight in the Reader’s Garden Thursday at the Akron Public Library. At Right, at the same time, the eastern edge of Akron is obliterated by wind-driven snows. By 3 p.m., the snow showers ended. By 10 p.m. Saturday, snow fell in earnest again. By 10 a.m. Sunday, Akron had another 3 inches. Snow showers continued until Monday morning -- with surrounding areas reporting up to six inches of snow accumulations this past weekend. Photo by Julie Ann Madden
Wrestlers win BCIG Invite title By Julie Ann Madden The Akron-Westfield wrestlers, who are ranked fourth in Iowa Class 1A, won the Battle Creek Ida Grove Tournament that was held Friday, Jan. 19 and Saturday, Jan. 20. The BCIG meet is a 23 school meet and one of the best in Iowa. In winning the meet A-W crowned three champions Chad Morehead, 160 lbs., David Hecht, 189 lbs. and David Ericson, heavyweight. Place winners were Brody Verschoor, 130 lbs. - third; Joe Sievert, 145 lbs. - second; Jon Sievert, 152 lbs. - third and Eric Waterbury, 215 lbs. got a sixth place. A-W won the championship by taking 13 wrestlers to the meet and 12 were still wrestling on Saturday. It was a complete team effort as AW placed seven wrestlers overall. Tyler Schneider, Cody Reed, Nick Hoffman, Josh Taylor and Doug Loutsch all bounced back from a first round loss on Friday to win a consolation match. Without these wins A-W would have come up short to win the team title. Brody Verschoor lost a tough overtime match to eighth ranked Todd Linden of WC, but bounced back to grab a third place spot. On his way to third place, Verschoor upset sixth ranked Tony Johnson of MMC. Joe Sievert finished second to Mike Sandy of Spirit Lake Park 6- 2. Sandy is ranked number three in Class 2A. Joe pinned a 30-1 Kevin Webker of RCL, ranked sixth in 2A. John Sievert placed third losing to eventual champion Nick Lauthlin of Cherokee is semis, 7-4. Chad Morehead met Mike Eason of BCIG in the finals. Morehead railed 6-4 with 20 seconds left when he then threw Eason and pinned his opponent with three seconds left on the clock. Hecht pinned his way to the finals then met Dan Borchers, ranked sixth in 2A. Borchers handed Hecht his first loss two weeks ago, but Hecht turned the tables in OT, 6-4. Ericson also pinned his way to the finals then scored an 8-0 major decision. Ericson wrestled extremely well the entire tournament as well as all the other wrestlers. This was a big meet and to win it is really an outstanding fete.
V Brittney Miller and Rachel Harris (No. 10) work on defense against Sgt. Bluff-Luton and go after the ball.
by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield Westerner girls kept their record perfect but not without a real struggle. A-W was victorious with a 57-47 win over Sgt. Bluff-Luton, at A-W Tuesday, Jan. 16. The game really wasn’t decided until the last 30 seconds. The Westerners had a battle on their hands all night. In the first half A-W led by as many as seven early in the second quarter but let SB-L back into the game at halftime, 30-28. The third quarter was a real nip and tuck affair. A-W led by eight but the Warriors ran off nine straight to lead the Westerners 37-36. Free throws by Mackenzie Heyl, Brittney Miller and Laura Kleihauer put A-W back in front. Krista Biernbaum hit a three and SB-L took the early lead in the fourth period. Midway in the fourth Tana Colt, who led the team in scoring with 25 and Shelby Johnson took over. Both players had steals and turned their thieving into points as A-W started to take command. A-W’s defense really came about in the fourth as they held SB-L to eight points. A-W probably didn’t play as well as they have, but SB-L is a pretty good team and they use a lot of players and balanced scoring. It was a real good ball game and a good test. A-W: 19-30-41-57 SB-L: 14-28-39-47 Scoring A-W: Colt, 25; Miller, 15 SB-L: Bode, 11; Baird, 8; Nielsen, 8
Michael Oetken fights for the ball with Sgt. Bluff defenders. Teammate Eric Eskra (No. 10) comes to help. > A-W boys lose heartbreaker by Hank Krause The Akron-Westfield Westerner boys led most of way on the home court Tuesday, Jan. 19 against Sgt. Bluff-Luton. A-W really worked their tails off only to see it get away, 39-37. Brad Andrews, the 6’8” Warrior, hit a three foot shot as the ball settled in the net as the buzzer went off. Andrews scored six points for the night and they were all in the fourth quarter. In a ball control type of game, A-W led at the end of one, 7-6 The Westerners widened it to 16-12 at halftime. The second half was really rough and tumble half. It seemed to have a lot of body contact with bodies flying at times. A-W’s scoring was led by Mike Oetken who had 13 and Roman Eastman added eight. Both players rebounded well against the taller Warriors. What bothered me was that the three officials twice had to have time to confer on what the call was. I’m sure that’s okay in a way, but does put a question in people’s minds. Make the call and move on. The two teams were all knotted up at 26 at the end of three. The game was tied five times in the fourth quarter and the lead changed hands three times. Tyler Johnson had a steal and a lay-up to tie it at 37 with 1:00 to play. A-W played excellent defense but another ref conference at the 06:6 clock reading. Andrews then hit the shot and it was over. Eric Eskra is an excellent floor leader and ball-handler but also played very good defense. All the kids played very hard. A-W: 7-16-26-37 SB-L: 6-12-26-39 Scoring A-W: Oetken, 13; Eastman, 8 SBL: Moore, 21 |
