Pickin' pumpkins at
Diane's Pumpkin Patch
By Julie Ann Madden
There are all shapes and sizes of pumpkins at Diane's Pumpkin Patch.
Guests have the choice of selecting one from the craft shop or riding
out to the patch and picking their own. In addition, there are plenty of
gourds for decorating one's home or business for the autumn season.
There are smooth gourds and ones with bumps. There are green ones,
yellow ones, orange ones and ones of multiple colors. There are even
some shaped like apples and snakes. Visitors will also find a selection
of squash and Indian corn. Diane's Pumpkin Patch is more than just
finding a variety of harvest produce. There is Flash, the basset hound
to greet visitors. Llamas and a pony to pet. Hay rides through the
pumpkin patch. A “paint” barn where visitors can decorate their pumpkins
by painting them. A craft shop where shoppers of all ages can find
something to decorate their homes for autumn and Halloween. A tent for
eating treats and enjoying an evening in the country and a bonfire for
roasting hot dogs and making s'mores if weather permits. Diane's Pumpkin
Patch is open from 4 - 6 p.m. on Fridays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays;
and 1 - 5 p.m. on Sundays. Appointments are also made for groups to
visit Diane's Pumpkin Patch and enjoy several activities. Lucy Colt's
Creative Corner preschool students spent a morning at the pumpkin patch.
They took a hay ride through the pumpkin patch, making a stop so each
child could pick their own pumpkin. They decorated their pumpkins in the
paint barn. Then they learned about gourds, squashes and Indian corn in
the Craft Shop. They finished their visit in the tent eating homemade
pumpkin cookies made by one of the students' moms. On Friday night,
Becky Brinck of Sioux City brought several friends to celebrate her 13th
birthday at the pumpkin patch.“ It's really fun,” she said.
