Hey, we did it again!!!

By Hank Krause

The Akron-Westfield Westerner softball team and the Woodbury Central Wildcats may have played the state championship game Monday evening in Akron. Kayla Smith and Randi Ebert battled tooth and claw in a real pitchers dual. Smith came out on top with a fine 4-3 win in extra innings. However, not without tension, nail biting, and heart wrenching stress. It was a real dandy! A-W will play Monday, July 31 in Fort Dodge for their fourth consecutive trip to the big show. Congratulations to the coaches and the girls for hard work, dedication, and making we fans proud. (See full story on the game next week.)

Wireless internet is now available at Akron Public Library

By Julie Ann Madden

Akron has its first public wireless internet access. Wireless internet users can find this service at the Akron Public Library. “It's available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Akron Public Library Director Jeannie Frerichs, explaining the library doesn't have to be open for people wanting to use wireless internet. People must have their own wireless internet service as well as have their own wireless internet hardware installed in their computer system. “We do not touch their computers,” said Frerichs, adding that they do not offer wireless internet support services -- just the service allowing wireless internet users a source to use to connect to their own wireless internet service. There is no charge for using the library's wireless internet connection. According to Frerichs, the wireless internet can be accessed from inside the library as well as in the Reader's Garden. Already a person from Minnesota used the library's wireless internet to finish a few work-related projects while on vacation. If anyone has questions about the library's wireless internet service, please call the library at 568-2601.
