Commissioners set Hyperion

public hearing for March 3

By Julie Ann Madden

On Feb. 12, it wasn’t a surprise that the Union County Commissioners set a public hearing on the Hyperion rezoning application and ordinance for Monday, March 3. The surprise came when Commissioner Ross Jordan asked the other three commissioners present to table setting a public hearing for two weeks. Commissioner Marvin Schempp was absent. “I would like to defer this motion again,” said Jordan, explaining he’d asked Hyperion officials four questions on Feb. 8 and requested an answer by Feb.11. Three A-W wrestlers stand on podium at state

John Sievert wins No. 150

by Hank Krause

The Akron-Westfield wrestlers ended up in tenth place out of 86 teams in the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament held in Des Moines on Feb. 14-16. A-W had three wrestlers in the meet. Brody Verschoor, Joe Sievert and John Sievert were all competitors. Brody Verschoor placed seventh at 145 lbs. while Joe Sievert place third at 160. Joe wrestled under a handicap with a broken nose, which he suffered in the semi’s. John Sievert placed third at 189, plus John won match number 150. Verschoor started with Clay Welter of Don Bosco. Welter won by decision over Verschoor 3-1. For all practical purposes this was the championship match. Welter went on to be the 145 pound champion. Joe Sievert at 160 won his first match by a pin. In the second round Sievert pinned his opponent in the third period. Sievert then lost 6-5 to Brian Kooiker of CMB plus breaking Joe’s nose. The coach from Waterloo East asked Joe if he wrestled with a broken nose, and Joe said yes. The coach from Waterloo East then said, “Joe was one tough #*#*#*#!! Sievert then pinned Mark Benning in the first period. Sievert then won 10-3 over Logan Faucher of Guthrie Center to win third place. John Sievert was also a third place winner. John won a major decision 14-2 over Kass Lester of Pleasantville. Sievert then tangled with Jake Hoffman of Graettinger- Terrill. Sievert had lost to the number one ranked Hoffman in the Battle Creek-Ida Grove tourney. Sievert won 11-6 at state. Sievert then lost to John Lerdal of New London, the eventual champion, 8-1. Sievert then beat Matt Ferlich of Highland by pin. John then won 9-2 over Andrew Roberts of AGSR. Roberts was ranked third in the state. John Sievert placed third and also won match number 150.

A-W boys’ season halted

by Hank Krause

The 2007-08 Akron-Westfield boys basketball season came to an end at Cherokee on Tuesday, Feb. 12. South O’Brien defeated A-W 48-34 during District action in Class 2A. The boys finished their year with a fine 16-6 record. Sixteen wins is a new A-W record plus the majority of the kids return for next year. A-W jumped out to a 10-2 lead as they shot well and rebounded well to start the quarter. SOS responded well and tied it at the end of one 14-14 as they went on a 12-2 run. SOS got their second lead as Ryan Brasser hit a three to make it 17-16. A-W responded as Chris Carlson hit a short jump shot following Mike Oetken’s shot from underneath. Oetken hit another jump shot and A-W led 24-17. SOS came right back by the hands of Jarod Syndergaard. That’s “Sin Der Gaard.” Syndergaard, who had 15 in the first half ended with a game high of 25. For a sophomore he is one great player. In the second half SOS didn’t do anything different but really tightened things up on A-W. The Wolverines denied passing the ball inside and really cut down dribbling to get in a better shooting position. SOS held A-W to three points in the third and two in the last quarter. They really played excellent defense. A-W, on the other hand, played a good first half and played pretty good defense in the second half. The Westerners just couldn’t put the ball in the bucket. It was still a good season as A-W beat the conference champion Hinton, beat the runner-up Unity Christian and beat the number one seed in our district Westwood of Sloan. It’s just that SOS is playing about as well as they can play. What makes me ill is that both Syndergaard and Brasser are both sophomores. A-W and SOS should have some great battles the next couple of years.
